Las Animas County, founded in 1866, is the largest county by area in Colorado with a total of 4,775 square miles. It shares a boundary with northern New Mexico. The population was 14,555 in 2020. The county seat is Trinidad, one of the original stops on the Santa Fe Trail.
Trinidad Lake State Park is a scenic, 2,700-acre recreation center that surrounds Trinidad Lake at the base of the Culebra Range of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Camping in every season and abundant water sports make this a popular base from which to explore the entire southeast region.
